Books, Books, Everywhere

This post is from the something-other-than-anime-for-once category. I realized that I have posted many things about my favorite anime, but nothing about any of my favorite books. So, in a vain attempt to broaden your interests, I decided I should try to remember the things I’ve read that were pretty good. Back in high school, before the everyday cram sessions of college I read–a lot. In fact, I read everything I could get my hands on from when I was able to read through high school. Most family vacations in the car had my mom telling me “Get your nose out of that book and look at the scenery” at least a dozen times. I still read in college, but not nearly as much, so most of my recommendations will probably be slightly outdated to all the Harry Potter fans out there. I’m not exactly sure what I’m going to recommend (spur of the moment thing as it is) but it should be suitable for high schoolers and up, some may be suitable for slightly younger people, I’m not sure. ;)
Action Books
- Anything by Tom Clancy (except the Op-Center series, blech)
- Anything by Robert Ludlum
- Rouge Warrior series by Richard Marcinko (I read this in high school but I’m pretty sure it’s not really appropriate reading material for a high school girl, it’s really vulgar in places)
Sci-fi/Fantasy books
- Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien (you can try the Silmarillion but I never was hard-core enough to make it through it)
- Dragonriders of Pern series by Anne McCaffrey
- Dune series by Frank Herbert
- The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy series by Douglas Adams
Books for Geeks
- The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand
- Snow Crash and Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson (don’t let the first few chapter of Cryptonomicon get you down, it’s really good after that)
- Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
This is obviously not an exhaustive list of everything that I read and liked. It’s more like a list of things that popped into my head as I was typing and so is therefore probably sorely lacking. I recommend picking up a library card or visiting used book stores because new books tend to be expensive, especially when you buy several at a time. I was going to link all the author’s to Amazon or something, but I found that I’m too lazy and you’ll have to look up the information for yourself. :)
