Add Your Blog to Google Buzz

I’ve added the rel=”me” links back to my Google profile, which is supposed to link up my Google account and my blog, allowing me to add it to my connected sites in Google Buzz. Unfortunately, it seems like I’ve either done it wrong or it just takes forever. A quick search turned up another, easier way to do it.

The instructions are for a WordPress.com site, but it’s easy to setup a custom blog, too. Log-in to the Google Webmaster Tools with the Google account you want associated with your blog and click Add a Site. Then, you’ll get a link you need to add to the header of your blog. If you’re using WordPress (not a Worpress.com blog), you can edit the header.php file of your theme to add the link.

Once the link it added, click verify in the Webmaster Tools interface and, assuming it works, you’re all set. You can then go to Google Buzz and your blog will show up in the Connected Sites pop-up. Voila!

Site Moved – Again

We’ve updated blog engines again, this time from Typo to WordPress. Dustin had to move our sites anyway due to a server change at our hosting company, so we decided to update to a blog that actually has active development. Let me know if you see any weirdness with the site or the RSS feed.

Not Exactly Five Nines

Unless, of course, you meant five nines of downtime. (For those of you who don’t know what this means, check Wikipedia here).

It appears our hosting server has had some issues lately, causing an abnormal number of reboots, and Dustin’s auto startup script for our stuff isn’t working anymore. Combine this with the fact that we don’t know the site is down unless we visit it ourselves (which you can tell from my posting history happens rarely at best), and you get random long outages.

We’re working on it and hopefully the site will stay up for more than five minutes in the future. Maybe.

Site CSS Broken

It seems like the CSS for the site has spontaneously decided to go on strike. We’ll look at it after work tonight, but until then, treat it as a trip down memory lane, back to a time when the web wasn’t pretty. :)

So I was looking through Google Analytics today to see if anyone was visiting and where they were coming from and I happened across a very nasty surprise. It turns out, quite a few extremely inappropriate searches lead to my former gallery.jessieferguson.com site. This was a shocker, since I knew that all of the pictures I posted should not be returning during these searches.

Enter comment spam. Not only comment spam, comment spam that apparently contains a redirect. I almost had a heart attack. Seriously. I really, really, really, really hope no one I know clicked on any of those links and thought it was my doing. Ick. Anyone know how to get Google to update their cache besides waiting around? All the current Google links correctly point to our 404 page, but the cache still points to the old site, comment spam and all. *shudder*

Site Move

In the next week or so we’ll be moving my site from the server currently located in our pantry (don’t ask) to our TextDrive account, which is where Dustin’s site is being hosted. With the change I’ll be moving from DasBlog to Typo, so the look of the site will be revamped as well. Overall it’ll be nice to move to a more stable hosting environment, plus it’ll be a nice bonus to be able to reclaim my pantry floor for, I don’t know, food. :)

New Year, New Name, New Site Design

I’ve finally updated the site design. All the pretty rounded corners are thanks to Nifty Corners and are created using Javascript instead of images. That means if you have Javascript turned off, you’ll be missing out. :)

There are still quite a few things I need to iron out, but it’s close enough that I am going ahead and taking it live. If you still see a messed up looking green site, you need to shift-refresh to get the new CSS.

I plan to keep both JessieFerguson.com and JessieMihalik.com, at least for a while. My site email is still setup for the JessieFerguson.com domain, so continue to use the current email address.

The new design has been tested in at least 1024×768 on the following systems:

Windows XP SP2
- Firefox 1.5
- Internet Explorer 6.0.2900.2180.xpspsp2gdr.050301-1519 (I kid you not, that’s the version string…)
Mac OS 10.3.9
- Firefox 1.5
- Safari 1.3.2 (v312.5)

So, if you’re using something else, let me know how it looks.

Moving

We’ll be moving this Sunday and won’t have internet connection in our new house until Monday evening. That plus the DNS propagation time means the server will be down for a while. The downtime also includes any @jessieferguson.com email addresses, so hold off on that “P3NIS en-LARGE-ment NOW!!!!!!” email until Wednesday or Thursday, m’kay?

Referrer Cleanup

Since I never look at the posts other than on the main page, I never really noticed all of the referrers building up and causing an eyesore. Once I did see it, I was aghast that no one had complained. I mean really, what are you people doing? Complaining is the only way to know true happiness! So, anyway, the referrers are gone, but trackbacks and pingbacks will still be displayed.

Just as an interesting side note, this search has to be my favorite referrer this week. Yes, that’s the actual search link that showed up in my referral log.
