All the Edits

On Friday, I heard back from my editor about Polaris Rising. She requested a minor edit to a scene, but overall, she liked the new ending, which is a huge relief. Yay!

I also got initial feedback from my agent about The Queen’s Gambit, and it’s going to be a far more substantial edit than one scene, so I did what any self-respecting workaholic would do.

I took the weekend off.

Completely off. I didn’t run or work or clean or do anything but lie on the sofa, watch the Olympics, and read three books.

It was awesome.

You may be asking how I can legitimately call myself a workaholic when I so obviously didn’t work this weekend. Well, here’s the deal: I know myself. I know that given half a chance, I’ll burn the candle at both ends until nothing is left. So I consciously take breaks when I can.

Right now, I don’t have any super urgent deadlines. Yeah, writing PR2 is like pulling teeth, but I still have time. TQG is done. I can afford to take the weekend off and refill the well, so I did.

But now it’s Monday and time to edit all the things. :)

  1. Good for you! I’m a big fan of taking care of oneself.

I enjoyed TQG very much and am excitedly awaiting PR.

What were the 3 books you read?

    1. Two of them were just okay, so I’m not going to name them. I’m 90% of the way through From Lukov with Love, though, and I’m loving it. Allllll the feels. If it holds up to the end, I plan to post about it. That said, definitely try a sample before buying because the writing style might not be for everyone.

  2. I did what every *non* self-respecting workaholic does: accepted a job with a tight deadline on Friday, on top of my other fast closing deadlines, and burned the midnight oil through the weekend :)
There will come a time when I’ll stop pulling these crazy stunts, but it for sure wasn’t this time
Glad to hear about Polaris Rising though! Excited to read it

  3. I am so glad that you took a break from everything going on with your books. Time off is so totally necessary. I should know because I was an accountant for years and in that industry, deadlines never end. Once you meet one deadline, another is on your horizon and at year end, all of the work triples. Eventually, it broke me. I lost the edge that you need to stay on top of everything and that was it.
Life is short and if you are not careful, you arrive at “old age/retirement” not knowing what the hell happened and why?? Especially Why.
Relax/recharge and do something you love with a new verve in your step. Writing is what you love. Not recharging every now and then will make it a chore.
    Hugs from Canada.

  4. PS am re-reading the Honor Harrington series by David Weber. I love the series because it has space ships/wars/strong and wonderful characters and violence only when it is necessary. Sex is not that pervasive and does not run the story.(unfortunately in so many of what is being released, if you take out the sex and violence, there is simply nothing there.) That is why I enjoyed your writing so much. There was a solid story that was engaging to read.
    Hugs

  5. I took the weekend off as well, but not in a good way, I was sick.
I enjoyed the Queens Gambit and am looking forward to PR; but a whole year to go…?.

Have you seen the cover for PR?

  6. Good for you! Down time is so esencial. In one of the first summers after I started teaching I read 22 books on the first 20 days of vacation! I slowed down after that, but clearly I needed a break, and I took it. Take it when you can, because the rest of the time it’s go go go!

  7. Dear Jessie,
Yay!! for good self-care and the final PR edit; We’re that much closer to reading another Mihalik Marvel ? TQG is an amazing adventure too and I’m fan-girl-squeeling over the fact we get TWO series ?from my favorite up & coming author!
    ((Snoopy dance))?

    1. I don’t think this is the final PR edit, more like the mini-edit before the final. But we are getting closer and closer to it being a real book!
