A Camping Weekend

Today dawned cold and dreary, which makes me even happier that we spent the weekend at Enchanted Rock with sunny, 85°F weather. We almost didn’t go because the rain forecast was more than 50%, but my optimistic husband talked me into it, and I’m so glad he did. It sprinkled on us a few times, but mostly the weather was lovely.

Also, because it’s in the boonies, we didn’t have cell service, which meant a weekend away from being constantly connected. It was awesome. I am tethered to my phone as much as the next person, and there were a few times I would’ve liked to post a photo to social media, but overall, it was nice to disconnect.

Plus, look at this amazing campsite we snagged.

Campsite

Enchanted Rock Friends joined us for Friday night and we spent Saturday hiking. A lot of the trails are exposed, so my husband and I both came back a little crispier than when we left.

Windy The wind on top of the rock was fierce. All of the photos are terrible because my clothes are plastered to me. Here’s one from before we started climbing. Notice the crazy hair because the wind was from behind and I couldn’t keep my hat on.

Smores And finally, the best part of camping: campfires and s’mores! I have to force myself to forget that I can make s’mores on my gas stove at home, because that is very dangerous knowledge. 😂

We had a really nice time, though I’m getting too old to sleep on the ground, sleeping pad or no. When we returned home, I immediately starting searching for a thicker sleeping pad. We car camp pretty much exclusively, so why should I use a backpackable pad when I could have a heavy, luxurious option? :)

For the record, my husband doesn’t love my “take everything including the sink” approach to camping, but even he agreed that a new pad may be in order. ::rubs hands:: Next REI coupon, luxury will be mine.

How about you? Did you do anything fun this weekend?

  1. When I went camping in the Loire Valley a few years ago I managed to pack a 6 man tent (so i could stand up in it and eat breakdast in the porch), a blow-up double mattress, Egyptian cotton sheets etc, my summer feather quilt and fold up chairs into a 2 seater sport car! I also bought a french hairdryer. Best camping trip ever. I’m not too keen on the sleeping mats and roughing it if I have options and I’ve very good at packing to make sure I have them 😆 We didn’t do smores as the idea has not quite reached the UK though we do do marshmallows or uncooked pieces of jelly (your gelatine??) on a stick – yum. I find smores a bit too sickly especially with the hershey in the middle.

    1. I’m super impressed by your packing skills! We managed to fill a Nissan Cube (a small SUV) with far less luxury.

A friend from Hungary camped with us and she wasn’t sold on s’mores, either. But she liked the graham crackers so we didn’t have to boot her out of camp. ;)

      1. I work for a museum so packing a car is child’s play and I’m very incentivised about my comfort!
It’s been a while since Graham’s crackers- are they like digestive or rich tea biscuits?

I love the way a common culture is divided by language and snacks 😉 also the way Americans and Canadians say ‘pants’ as outer wear- I always have to reread those lines- it cracks me up something chronic…..

  2. Tent camping has it’s perks, but sleeping on the ground isn’t one of them! Last summer I tented for a family reunion, and that’ll be the last time.
I hope to borrow a trailer for the next one. 😉

  3. Ugh I am healing from a root canal, my first. Not fun!

We tent camp in NH and RI in the summer, and that is a lot of fun, but my husband also complains that I bring too much, including the smore’s kit!
One Memorial day a few years ago it snowed in NH, only an 1″ but it was unexpected and cold.

    1. A s’more is an American dessert predominately eaten while camping because it involves toasting marshmallows over a fire.

From the bottom up: a square of graham cracker, a piece of chocolate, the toasted marshmallow, and a final piece of graham cracker. The toasted marshmallow melts the chocolate and turns the whole thing into a delicious, gooey mess.

You can use a microwave to approximate it at home (by melting the marshmallow and chocolate), but it’s not as good, IMO, as the original.

      1. Ohhh okay ! We do toast marshmallows over the fire too, but just that 😂 I’d like to try those one day, marshmallows and chocolate definitely seem a good idea 😂

Oh and I meant to ask when the next ARC Polaris Rising giveaway would be? I just finished reading Queen’s Gambit and really looking forward to Loch and Ada’s story
